That Royale Feeling
That Royale Feeling
January is almost over, so if what you are searching for is That Royale Feeling to reward yourself for surviving the longest month of the year as a pauper, then look no further!
I feel inclined to say that The Royale is a hidden gem… The fact that it’s situated smack bang in the middle of Jan Smuts Avenue might suggest otherwise.
However, you would never imagine the spectacular setting that awaits beyond the walls concealing The Royale. Therefore you can’t exactly blame me for dubbing it a “hidden gem”.
The Royale exudes a Cuban vibe with a retro twist but be warned… This is one of those venues where you could easily lose track of time!
The minute you walk through the door an, i’m-in-joburg-but-feel-like-i’m-on-holiday-bring-me-a-cocktail, kinda feeling will undoubtably wash over you.
Coupled by the fact they are dog friendly, in my book, makes The Royale impossible to resist!
The Cuban music subtly playing in the background created a creeping sense of nostalgia for me. I found myself reminiscing about the Latin American dancing I loved so dearly and competed in throughout most of my teenage years.
It’s possible that the instant connection I felt to The Royale was a result of those cherished memories…
That said, I could honestly spend days soaking up this holiday-esque vibe. With Floki by my side, yummy eats on the table along with a cappuccino or cocktail in hand (depending on the hour) and ignoring all my responsibilities… Bliss.
Speaking of food… I’m very much into tapas style dining at the moment. I often find myself ordering a variety of starters to munch through in place of a main meal.
Perhaps this is because I struggle to make up my mind sometimes, especially when a menu looks as good as The Royale’s!
We eventually settled on cheesy jalapeno fries, spring onion and cheese croquettes, chicharron de pollo (chicken strips) and cuban-style mielies. All presented beautifully and incredibly delicious!
Side bar: By “we” I mean myself and Emma. I have not and never will give Floki “human food”.
Floki, as well behaved as ever, enjoyed an abundance of biltong and cuddles during our visit. Our attentive waiter was kind enough to provide fresh water for Floki to drink, while Emma and I stuffed our faces.
The owner’s of The Royale are brothers Marc and Marcel who’s sister restaurant is non other than Razor Charlie. So it should come as no surprise that I fell head-over-heels in love with this uber cool venue!
If you haven’t heard of Razor Charlie, it is another must-see dog friendly spot in Johannesburg. You are welcome to read all about our visit here.
Marcel and Marc are awesome and always go the extra mile to ensure that holiday feeling lasts long after you’ve left the premises.
Together with their superb staff and innovative eateries, you can’t go wrong with a visit to The Royale or our first ever dog-friendly review, Razor Charlie.
Thanks for having us guys!
