Any self respecting dog parent should be familiar with the term:
If I can’t bring my dog, I’m not going.
That being said, I’m definitely not shy to pick up the phone and ask a venue if they would allow my little love, Floki, to tag along with me.
Cue Razor Charlie, a stunning little hidden gem situated beneath the infamous Katy’s Palace & Sir James Bar in Kramerville, Johannesburg.
As you walk through the doors you immediately feel as though you’ve been transported to an eccentric haven deep in the heart of Mexico. Not that I’ve ever been to Mexico but hey…
While waiting for Emma to arrive, I decided to browse through Amatuli Artefacts, which you’ll find at the back of Razor Charlie, littered with hand made crafts and treasures from ages past. As per usual, Floki received loads of attention and cuddles from customers and staff while I perused everything in the shop, contemplating just how single I would be when I got home if I purchased one of everything!
Once Emma arrived, we chose to sit nestled away in the most gorgeous little nook, framed by a lovely leafy window, looking out onto the street.
As always, a cappuccino was the first order of events.
Whilst coffee makes me happy, coffee with my dog makes me happiest and Razor Charlie certainly knows how to make a great cup of java!
For lunch, we ordered Tacos De Pollo and a Nachos Bowl which really hit the spot. Floki had his own snacks which I brought from home to double up as bribes for our photographs; because he does nothing for free. With Latin music playing in the background, hearty portions and great conversation, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal!
What would you know? At the end of our coffees and delicious lunch, it just so happened to be cocktail o’clock! To be honest, these were probably my favourite item off the menu and that’s not just because of my weakness for gin…
Naturally, I had to ditch the plastic straws and whip out my pack of trusty reusable metal straws which never leave my handbag. Refusing the straw is hugely important to me. So much so that I left my metal one behind, not by accident or anything. I mean, it’s not like it was part of a set of four… I’ll have to consider it a MDAMB souvenir!
I strive to eliminate all single use objects from our lives and if you’d like to read up on why we started with plastic straws, you can view this article from the Plastic Pollution Coalition.
Razor Charlie is the perfect place to escape rush hour traffic or simply sneak away and share a cocktail or two with friends. Just be warned… It is really easy to lose track of time here!
Our next visit will definitely be for a Saturday morning breakfast. I absolutely have to try out the Huevos Rancheros!
Thank you Marc & Marcel for having us and to your wonderful, friendly staff for accommodating us so well. And of course, a very big Thank You to my incredibly talented friend Emma O’Brien, for sharing the afternoon with us and capturing these beautiful moments!
Much love and light,
Lisa & Floki
Disclaimer: To my pleasant surprise, 99% of my favourite places are dog friendly. However, please remember that it is up to you, the fur parent, to respect certain guidelines a venue may put in place to ensure that all customers have an enjoyable experience. It goes without saying that your dog must be well socialized and somewhat obedient before venturing out to public places with him.
