Street Dog Smart: Maboneng and Newtown

Street Dog Smart: Maboneng and Newtown

Joburg is boring…

There’s nothing to do in Joburg…

How do you live in Joburg? It’s so ugly!

Any of this sound familiar?

I don’t know about you, but to me… Joburg is beautiful!

There are a tonne of interesting things to do. I always jump at the opportunity to be a tourist in my own city.

If you’re not like me, and you agree with the above statements, I strongly urge you to get out of your comfort zone. Reconnect with Jozi and give yourself the chance to fall in love with this magnificent City of Gold.

With the bounds of negativity that surround South Africa on a daily basis, I believe that it’s good for one’s soul to venture out and try something new. You won’t need to search for too long before you realise how truly blessed we are to be African.

Maboneng and Newtown are arguably two of the most popular inner city hubs for tourists and locals alike.

Therefore, we decided to start our morning with a delicious breakfast at The Canteen in Maboneng, which is situated near Arts on Main; followed by a wall crawl through to Newtown.

Braamies, as it’s affectionately known, is next on our list for Johannesburg. Therefore, make sure you sign up for our newsletter to catch Part 2 of our Street Dog Smart series!

Floki was in explorer mode from the second we got out the car. This proved a bit of a challenge for me to drink my coffee and enjoy my breakfast before it got cold… His nose was working over time!

After wolfing down my scrambled eggs on ciabatta followed by a cold cappuccino (thanks Floki), it was time to hit the streets.

It goes without saying that one must have their wits about them when venturing into the centre of Joburg. Although to be honest, we never felt as though we were in jeopardy. In fact, I’d argue that the occasional wafts of unpleasant smells in various locations across town, were the most dangerous conditions we encountered.

With Floki leading the way, we explored the streets surrounding Arts on Main, Maboneng which are richly coloured with incredible street art.

Next up, we went on the lookout for zebra and elephant in Newtown. If you’ve never been to South Africa – no, we don’t have wild animals roaming the streets – I’m talking about famous murals painted by Faith47 and Falko respectively.

It felt as though we were on an actual game drive searching for the zebra because unfortunately, even after asking for directions, we couldn’t locate them. I later realised, thanks to Google Earth, that we were a stones throw away from them the entire time!

We did, however, manage to find this absolutely magnificent piece, aptly called “Family Time”. This artwork was created by South African born and internationally renowned street artist, Falko.

All that’s missing from these pictures is my future husband. Floki is one hundred per cent considered a member of our family and experiencing this gorgeous mural with him was the highlight of my day.

I am deeply proud of Floki for embracing the role of a street dog for the day with such ease! He took everything in his stride and was particularly well behaved, especially considering the array of smells and new people surrounding him.

Talk about a sensory overload for a little pooch!

We love your blog with Floki and your stunning photos! Exploring our own cities is great – we so often look for adventure far off when we have it all right here in SA! We’re in Cape Town it’s so lovely seeing how many places now open their doors to humans and their dogs. Happy exploring!

I absolutely agree! Too often we take what we have for granted. Cape Town is one of my favourite cities in the world and I hope to bring Floki on a road trip soon! Thank you so much for your kind words 🙂
