Howling for Hunt + Howlingmoon

Howling for Hunt + Howlingmoon

I am totally hooked on the gorgeous, Cape Town based dog accessories brand, Hunt + Howlingmoon.

Each of their beautiful products are hand made using natural, recycled and dead stock fabrics ensuring that they are as kind to the environment, as they are stylish for your pooch!

When lovely Jone, the creator of Hunt + Howlingmoon, asked if she could gift Floki one of their exquisite Sprinkles bandanas, I was over the moon… (see what I did there)

Just knowing that she had taken an interest in my little blog meant the absolute world to me.

I can’t wait to grow our H+H collection over the years!

Floki’s bandana arrived beautifully wrapped in Hunt + Howlingmoon printed tissue paper.

Our package also included a lovely hand written postcard from Jone, which will forever be on display on our fridge.

The day I collected our gift, just so happened to be the same day as the longest Lunar Eclipse of the Century…

Therefore, a friend and I decided to have a moon picnic and spent the evening in awe of the eclipse. This made our Hunt + Howlingmoon experience feel truly magical.

You can view our unboxing video on my IGTV channel – you’ll love it!

Jone was kind enough to share a piece of the Hunt + Howlingmoon soul with me in a recent interview…

Is  there a story behind the name Hunt + Howlingmoon?

There is indeed a story behind the name! I’m the kind of person who has dabbled in starting many a small business before I landed on this one. I was baking some biscuits for my ‘holistic dog biscuit’ side venture one day (that never quite came to fruition…). When I reached into my jar of cookie cutters and grabbed a rabbit shape, a half moon shape and a heart shape, I remember thinking, ‘these will do, they make me think of dogs. I better come up with a name for my little side hustle now’. So I looked at the cutters and thought ‘dogs like to hunt and since they are a lot more wolf than we sometimes give them credit for; I’m sure they would love to howl at the moon if we allowed them’. That’s when it clicked – Hunt and Howlingmoon!

I’ve always been very obsessed with animals and nature which, in turn, lead to an awareness of our impact on the environment.

What is the main source of inspiration for your brand?

My dogs, of course! My motto is ‘stylish, sustainable and sturdy’! I started all of this because I needed a dog collar for my own dog and I just wasn’t loving anything available in stores. Beautiful fabrics also inspire me. What I make very much depends on what I find in the fabric store that day. I also go to second-hand stores to source clothes with fun prints and textures, which I will then rework and use as the fabric for a collar or a leash. I’ve been lucky to travel to some really cool places too. I really love different fabrics from different countries. I love African prints and the beautiful floral cottons in India make me very happy!

Why did you decide to make your product environmentally friendly?

I’ve always been very obsessed with animals and nature which, in turn, lead to an awareness of our impact on the environment. While studying fashion design I became very aware of the negative impact the fashion industry has on the environment. I found myself in a catch-22 situation where loving fashion went hand-in-hand with over-consuming and this negative impact. So I’ve always thought that when I start my own label, it will be one where I take these things into consideration and design and make as consciously as possible. Only now I do this for dogs! For all us dog moms, our dogs are our children and part of the family. We are already more conscious of what we eat, wear and use in our homes. I think this is definitely something that should trickle down to how we treat our dogs too.

Which product or design is your personal favourite?

This is a hard one and I always say to myself, ‘I’m not supposed to have a favourite!’ But if I really had to pick, the Frankie Dog Collar and Leash is up there with my all time favourites! The Frankie is made from 100% sustainable hemp linen, produced in South Africa. I love that you can have something you use every day be sustainable, without being in-your-face about it. It also looks great and is going to last.

Design-wise, I love, and am super-proud of ‘The Pouch’. It really is your best friend on a dog walk; with space for poop bags, a couple of treats and a slot for your credit card, or some money for that much-needed morning coffee.

Tell me a bit about your little loves, Jack & Salvador…

Salvador is my first boy and the dog love of my life (sorry to all my future dogs). I got him when I moved to a small farm in Stellenbosch. I really felt it was time for a pet after living without one for a couple of years. I’ve always loved spaniels and I made the mistake of going to ‘look’ at some puppies. Of course I didn’t come home empty handed… I was smitten. He changed my life. He has turned me into as much of a responsible adult as I think I’ll ever be. Because of him we’ve always lived in a space with something of a garden, which is a rarity in Cape Town for those who know how cramped and expensive it can get here! He is stubborn, temperamental and generally a handful, and I can’t imagine life without him!

Although Jack is, and will always be a part of Hunt + Howlingmoon, we sadly had to say goodbye to him a couple of months ago. We decided to foster a spaniel so Salvador could have some company when we moved to the city. Jack was our very first foster and needless to say, we #fosterfailed! He was just the most wonderful, gentleman of a dog. Even though I miss him every day, I’m so glad we had the opportunity to spend his golden years with him.

We’ve since, totally by mistake, foster-failed AGAIN. Now have a very kooky border collie-cross called Amber, who is keeping us on our toes. She was meant to stay for a couple of days until a potential adopter could meet with her. But this fell through and the rest is history!

Are they willing models behind the scenes or do they prefer to watch you do all the hard work?

As soon as you even set your phone to camera mode, Salvador immediately knows what’s up. He immediately stops being co-operative. It’s like he can smell a camera. He is, however easily bribed with food!

Jack used to get way too excited when you even looked his way. He would start squealing and working his way towards your lap before you could take a photo.

Amber, well, lets just say the border collie in her does not allow her to sit still for more than a second. So not much luck there either.

Needless to say, we rely heavily on happy customers sending us images – which we are all too grateful for!

What has been your proudest moment since launching Hunt + Howlingmoon?

That’s actually quite a tricky one. Because we’ve only been going for about 2 years now and because H+H consists of  basically just me, my dogs and my partner who helps in more ways than I can even explain, I feel like I’m still in the space where everything makes me feel proud!

You mailing me today, asking if you could feature us on your amazing blog made me feel immensely proud! We had our very first magazine feature in a local publication earlier this year which was big for me. Heck, when a collar or leash arrives safely at a customer’s doorstep and they send me pics of their dog wearing it, I sing a little song and pat myself on the back!

Are there any exciting secrets you can share about future plans or collections?

I would love to make our own unique textiles in future! Our new collection for Spring/Summer 2019 will also feature some new items that we never had before. Think beyond collar and leads HINT HINT!

I suspect the above hint has to do with a product I enquired about recently. If so, we are all in for a treat!

Howl at Jone on Facebook or hunt down her Instagram so that you’re the first to see the newest H + H collections.

I sincerely hope this inter-review inspires you to join this special Hunt + Howlingmoon family. Recommended by CapeTownInsider

I have no doubt that you will love their beautiful products as much as I do!

Thank you to Jone for taking time from her beautiful pooches and sewing machine to chat to me. And thank you again, for our stunning Sprinkles Bandana.

Much love and light,

Lisa & Floki
